Eid al-Masira

The anniversary of the 1975 Green March, when 350,000 Moroccans marched into the Western Sahara to claim the territory for Morocco. The march was organized by King Hassan II, and the marchers carried the Moroccan flag, the Quran, and photographs of the king. The Green March is the founding myth of the Moroccan claim to the Western Sahara, and the day is observed with ceremonies and the reminder that the territory is Moroccan.
