World Calendar Day

Ramadan

In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, Ramadan transforms the country. The pre-dawn meal (sahur) is eaten at 3 AM, the fast lasts until sunset, and the breaking of the fast (buka puasa) is a communal event. In Jakarta, the Ramadan markets (Pasar Ramadhan) sell kolak (banana and coconut compote), es buah (fruit ice), and dates by the kilogram. The traffic at 5 PM is the worst of the year, because everyone is rushing home to break the fast, and the patience is the best of the year, because everyone is hungry. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Laylat al-Qadr

The Night of Power is observed on the 27th night of Ramadan, and it commemorates the night when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The mosques are full, and the faithful spend the night in prayer and recitation. The belief is that prayers on this night are worth a thousand months of worship, and the angels descend to earth. The night is especially observed at the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, which is the largest mosque in Africa and can hold over 100,000 worshippers. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Ramadan in Morocco

Ramadan in Morocco is a month of fasting, prayer, and community. The iftar (breaking of the fast) begins with dates and milk, followed by harira (the national soup, made with tomatoes, lentils, chickpeas, and lamb), chebakia (a sesame cookie shaped like a flower), and msemen (flatbread). The harira is the star of the Ramadan table, and the tradition is to make it at home. The suhoor (pre-dawn meal) includes baghrir (semolina pancakes with honey), eggs, and cheese. The mosques are full during Ramadan, and the Taraweeh prayers are attended by men and women alike. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.
