Dia de Reyes

Kids leave their shoes out the night before and wake up hoping for a gift from the Reyes Magos. The panaderias sell roscon de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby hosts the next gathering, though everyone forgets by February.

Badnje Vece — World Calendar Day
Regional/Cultural Day

Badnje Vece

The most sacred evening of the Orthodox calendar. A badnjak (oak branch) is brought into the house and laid on the fire, symbolizing the wood that warmed the newborn Christ. The meal is meatless: fish from the Adriatic, dried figs, walnuts, honey, and the flat bread called badnjak bread with a coin hidden inside. The family gathers around the hearth, and the oldest member leads the prayers. In the villages of the north, the badnjak is still cut from a living oak tree at dawn and carried home through the snow. In the coastal towns of Kotor and Budva, the tradition adapts to apartments and electric fireplaces, but the oak branch still comes through the door. The evening ends with the church service at midnight, when the bells of every Orthodox church in Montenegro ring out across the mountains and down to the sea.
