The Monastery of Ostrog is the most important pilgrimage site in Montenegro and one of the most visited Orthodox monasteries in the Balkans. Carved into the face of a vertical cliff 900 meters above the Zeta valley, the monastery was built in the 17th century by Vasilije, the Metropolitan of Herzegovina, who was later canonized as Saint Vasilije of Ostrog. The monastery contains his relics, and Orthodox Christians believe that praying at Ostrog can heal illness and grant wishes. Over a million pilgrims visit every year, climbing the steep path to the upper monastery on foot or on their knees. Muslims and Catholics also visit Ostrog, because in the Balkans, a holy site belongs to everyone. The monastery is a miracle of engineering and faith, clinging to the rock face like an eagle's nest, and it is the most visible symbol of the Montenegrin spiritual tradition.
