Ivanjdan

The feast of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on July 7 in the Julian calendar. In Montenegro, Ivanjdan is a summer festival that marks the height of the warm season. In the coastal towns, bonfires are lit on the beaches. In the mountains, families gather for outdoor feasts. The tradition of the Ivanjdan fire is ancient: young people jump over the flames for luck and health, and the ashes are scattered on the fields for fertility. In the old Montenegrin clans, this was the time of year when the katuns (summer mountain pastures) were fully active, and the shepherds would celebrate with their flocks on the high meadows of Lovcen, Durmitor, and Prokletije. The night is warm, the stars are bright, and the fires burn on every hilltop along the coast and in the mountains.
