Dan Cetinja

Cetinje is the old royal capital of Montenegro, the city of kings, monasteries, and the impossible history of a small mountain nation that held off the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Cetinje was the capital of Montenegro from 1482 to 1918, and it remains the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. The Cetinje Monastery, built in 1484, houses the relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje and claims to possess a fragment of the True Cross and the right hand of John the Baptist. The Blue Palace, the former royal residence, now hosts the president of Montenegro for ceremonial occasions. Cetinje Day is celebrated with concerts, exhibitions, and the gathering of Montenegrins who still believe that the old capital, not Podgorica, is the true center of the nation. The city sits at the foot of Mount Lovcen, and its streets are lined with embassies from a time when even the great powers recognized this small mountain state.
