Vidovdan
One of the most significant days in the Serbian Orthodox calendar, marking the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 and the martyrdom of Prince Lazar. In Montenegro, where the majority of the population follows the Serbian Orthodox tradition, Vidovdan is observed with church services, pilgrimages, and the remembrance of sacrifice. The day carries enormous historical and cultural weight. It is the day that symbolizes the choice between freedom and submission, between the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of earth. In Montenegro, Vidovdan is also connected to the Battle of Grahovo and other historical events in the long struggle for independence. The day is solemn, and the churches are full, and the old songs of the gusle (the single-stringed instrument of Balkan epic poetry) tell the stories of heroes who chose death over surrender.
