Dan Svetog Preobrazenja
One of the twelve great feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrating the transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. In Montenegro, the Transfiguration is observed with church services, and in the mountain villages, it marks the beginning of the harvest season. The connection between the Transfiguration and the high mountains of Montenegro is natural: the light on Durmitor, Lovcen, and Prokletije in August is a kind of transfiguration itself, turning the peaks gold and pink at sunset. The day is also associated with the end of the summer fasting period, and after weeks of abstaining from meat, many Montenegrin families celebrate with a feast that includes roast lamb, prsut, and kacamak. The monasteries on the mountains hold special services, and the faithful climb to them as pilgrims, as their ancestors did for centuries.
