Armistice

Monaco commemorates the end of World War I with a ceremony at the Monument aux Morts on the Avenue de la Costa. The monument, a bronze sculpture by the Monégasque artist Aristide Maillol, lists the names of the Monégasques who died in both world wars. Monaco's contribution to the war effort was small in absolute numbers but proportionally significant : out of a population of just a few thousand, dozens of Monégasques served in the French army, and several were killed. The ceremony is attended by the Prince, the Minister of State, the diplomatic corps, and the veterans of the French Foreign Legion (which maintains a presence in nearby Villefranche-sur-Mer).
