Fête de la Musique

Monaco joins France and the Francophone world in celebrating the summer solstice with free concerts in the streets, squares, and gardens of the principality. The Place du Casino, the Place du Palais, and the Esplanade of the Oceanographic Museum host performances ranging from classical orchestras to Monégasque folk bands. The Monégasque national anthem, "A Marcia de Muneghu," is performed by the Palais Princier band, and the night ends with a DJ set on the harbor. The Fête de la Musique is one of the few events in Monaco that is genuinely free and genuinely democratic : no VIP sections, no guest lists, no minimum spend at the bar. Everyone is welcome.

Fête de la Musique : Monégasque Edition

In addition to the main Fête de la Musique on June 21st, Monaco hosts a special Monégasque edition that features traditional Monégasque music, dance, and poetry. The event takes place on the Place du Palais, on Le Rocher, and the performers include the Coro di Monte-Carlo (the Monégasque choir), the Palais Princier Band, and local folk groups. The Monégasque language : a Ligurian dialect related to the language of Genoa : is featured prominently, and the songs include the national anthem ("A Marcia de Muneghu"), the sea shanties of the Monégasque fishermen, and the love songs of the old quarter. The Monégasque language is spoken by only about 5,000 people, and the Fête de la Musique Monégasque is one of the most important events for its preservation.
