The Catholic community observes the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with a Mass at the Cathedral of Monaco. The Cathedral, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, is the spiritual heart of Monaco, and the feast is a holy day of obligation. The Cathedral was built in 1875 from white La Turbie stone (the same stone used in the ancient Roman monument, the Trophée d'Auguste, which overlooks Monaco from the mountain above), and its façade glows in the winter light. The Cathedral's organ, built by the Italian firm Tamburini, is one of the finest in Europe, and the choir sings Palestrina's "Ave Maris Stella" : the Monégasque hymn to the Virgin Mary.
