The International Day of Older Persons is observed in Moldova with a focus on the challenges facing the elderly in a country where the pension is about 50 dollars per month. The tradition is to visit the grandparents, to bring them cake and wine, and to listen to their stories. The elderly are the keepers of Moldovan tradition, and their recipes, songs, and crafts are the living heritage of the country. The day is also a reminder that many elderly Moldovans live alone, because their children have emigrated for work, and the village is empty except for the old and the very young.
