Ziua Orasului Comrat
The capital of the Gagauz autonomous region celebrates its day with a festival of Gagauz culture, music, and food. The Gagauz are a Turkic people who converted to Orthodox Christianity, and their culture is a unique blend of Turkic traditions and Orthodox faith. The festival includes Gagauz folk music (with the distinctive sound of the gaida, a type of bagpipe), traditional Gagauz dishes (such as kaurma, a dish of fried meat with onions, and borscht with yoghurt), and a display of Gagauz crafts (embroidery, carpet weaving, and pottery). The Gagauz language is endangered (spoken by about 150,000 people), and the festival is a celebration of its survival.
