The International Day of Families is observed in Moldova with a focus on the challenges facing families in a country where many parents work abroad and leave their children with grandparents. The phenomenon of "social orphans" (children whose parents are alive but working abroad) is one of the most painful aspects of Moldovan society, and the day is a reminder that over 100,000 children have at least one parent working abroad. The tradition is to gather the family, to call the relatives who are far away, and to set an extra place at the table for those who cannot be present.
