The Old New Year is celebrated on January 14 following the Julian calendar, a smaller and more intimate celebration than the New Year on January 1. The tradition is to have a family dinner, sing colinda (carols), and prepare for the coming year. The Old New Year is a reminder that Moldova has two calendars (the Gregorian and the Julian) and two sets of holidays. Children go door to door with the sorcova (decorated twigs) one more time, and the elders say that the real winter begins now.
