Ziua Sfantului Ilie de Toamna
The autumn feast of Saint Elijah is celebrated in the wine regions of Moldova with the blessing of the new wine. The tradition is to bring a bottle of the new wine to the church, and the priest blesses it before it is drunk. The day marks the end of the grape harvest, and the beginning of the winemaking season. The wineries of Cricova, Milestii Mici, and Purcari hold open house events, and the tradition is to buy a bottle of new wine and to share it with friends. The day is also the name day for everyone named Ilie, and they celebrate with a feast of grilled meat, mamaliga, and new wine.
