Regional/Cultural Day
Ajunul Anului Nou
The last day of the year is celebrated with fireworks in Chisinau, champagne, and the traditional meal of sarmale, mamaliga, and placinta. The new year is greeted with the phrase "La multi ani!" (Many years!), and the fireworks are set off from the Great National Assembly Square. The tradition is to open a bottle of sparkling wine from Cricova at midnight, and to make a toast for the coming year. The television broadcasts the president's New Year address, and the children open their presents from Mos Craciun (Father Christmas). The table is set with every dish that Moldova can offer, and the wine flows until dawn.
