The anniversary of Moldova's independence from the Soviet Union on August 27, 1991. The celebration includes a military parade, the president's address, and the flying of the Moldovan flag (blue, yellow, and red). The day is also controversial: the pro-Russian parties prefer Victory Day on May 9, while the pro-European parties prefer Independence Day on August 27.
