This day honors the memory of Mihai Eminescu, the national poet of Romania and Moldova, who died on June 15, 1889, but whose birthday is celebrated on January 15. The date varies by institution, but February 10 is sometimes used for cultural events in Moldova. Readings of Eminescu's poetry are held in schools and libraries, and the most famous poem, "Luceafarul" (The Morning Star), is recited by memory. The day is a reminder that the Romanian language is the foundation of Moldovan culture, and that Eminescu is the poet of both Moldova and Romania.
