Intrarea in Biserica a Maicii Domnului

The feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple is celebrated in Moldova with a church service and the beginning of the Christmas fast (which lasts from November 21 to January 6). The tradition is to prepare the Christmas foods (sarmale, cozonac, and racituri) in advance, because the fast forbids meat, dairy, and eggs. The day is also the name day for everyone named Vasilisa or Elisabeta, and they celebrate with a feast of fish, mamaliga, and wine (the last feast before the fast begins). The church is decorated with icons of the Virgin Mary, and the priest tells the story of how the young Mary was brought to the Temple by her parents.
