Micronesia is a sovereign nation in free association with the United States, and UN Day is observed with school programs and community events. The AHA! moment: the Compact of Free Association, which governs the relationship between Micronesia and the United States, was signed in 1986. Under the compact, Micronesians can live and work in the United States without a visa, and the United States is responsible for Micronesia's defense. In exchange, Micronesia allows the United States to maintain military access to the region.
