El Grito
The night before Independence Day, the president of Mexico stands on the balcony of the National Palace and rings the bell that Father Hidalgo rang in 1810. The president shouts the names of the heroes of the independence, and the crowd responds with "Viva!" after each name. The Grito is the most emotional moment of the year, and every Mexican knows the words by heart. The Grito ends with "Viva Mexico! Viva Mexico! Viva Mexico!" and the crowd erupts in cheers, fireworks, and the singing of the national anthem.
