Dia de San Juan
The feast of St. John the Baptist is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks, and the tradition of jumping over the fire (for purification and good luck). The celebration is most elaborate in the indigenous communities of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Michoacan, where the bonfires are lit on the hilltops and the fireworks are set off at midnight. The tradition also includes the bathing in rivers and lakes (because St. John is the patron saint of water), and the drinking of pulque (the fermented agave drink that is the oldest alcoholic beverage in Mexico).
