La Temporada de Elotes

The elote season begins in June when the first fresh ears appear on the cart of the elotero (the corn vendor), who roasts them on a charcoal grill and serves them with mayonnaise, crema, queso, chili, and lime. The elote is the Mexican street food that needs no introduction, and the elotero is the sound of the neighborhood: the whistle, the bell, or the recorded jingle that announces his arrival. The elote season is also the season of the esquites (corn kernels in a cup with the same toppings), and the season of the tamales de elote (sweet corn tamales).

The rainy season begins in June or July, and the first rain of the season is a celebration: the streets smell of wet earth, the children run outside with their mouths open, and the adults say "ya llovio" (it finally rained) as if the sky had been holding back a secret. The rainy season is the season of the frog, the mosquito, the flooded street, and the green landscape that turns Mexico from brown to emerald in two weeks. The rainy season is also the season of the charco (the puddle), the flooded metro station, and the afternoon storm that arrives at 4pm like clockwork.
