The most important religious holiday in Mexico, and the day when millions of pilgrims visit the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico, and she appeared to the indigenous peasant Juan Diego on December 12, 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac. The image of the Virgin is imprinted on Juan Diego's tilma (cloak), and the tilma is displayed in the basilica. The day is observed with a procession, the singing of "Las Mananitas" to the Virgin, and the traditional meal of tamales and atole. The pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe is the largest in the Americas, and over 10 million people visit the basilica every year.
