Abolition de l'Esclavage

The anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius on February 1, 1835. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Aapravasi Ghat (the immigration depot where the indentured laborers arrived), and the reminder that Mauritius was built on the labor of enslaved Africans and indentured Indians. The Aapravasi Ghat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is the place where over 450,000 indentured laborers arrived between 1834 and 1920. Ceremonies also take place at Le Morne Brabant, the mountain where escaped slaves (maroons) took refuge.
