Ganesh Chaturthi

The birthday of Lord Ganesh is celebrated by Mauritius's Hindu community (52% of the population), and the celebration includes the installation of Ganesh idols in homes and temples, the offering of modak (sweet dumplings), and the immersion of the idols in the sea or a river. The immersion is the climax of the festival, and the procession through the streets is loud, colorful, and joyous. The Ganesh Chaturthi is the most important Hindu festival in Mauritius, and the immersion at Grand Bassin (the sacred lake in the crater of an extinct volcano) is the largest gathering. The Grand Bassin is also known as Ganga Talao, and it is the most sacred Hindu site in Mauritius. . 2026: Sep 1. 2027: Sep 20.
