Janmashtami

The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated by the Hindu community with fasting, singing, and the decoration of the temples. The devotees stay up until midnight (the hour of Krishna's birth), and the celebration includes the breaking of the dahi handi (a pot of curd suspended high above the ground). The young men form human pyramids to reach the pot, and the event is both a competition and a celebration. The temples in Mauritius are decorated with flowers and lights, and the air is filled with the sound of bhajans (devotional songs). . 2026: Aug 25. 2027: Aug 14.
