Ougadi
The Telugu New Year is celebrated by Mauritius's Telugu community (8% of the population), and the celebration includes the eating of ugadi pachadi (a chutney made from neem flowers, mango, tamarind, chili, salt, and jaggery). The pachadi symbolizes the six tastes of life: bitter, sweet, sour, spicy, salty, and astringent. The ugadi is the beginning of a new year, and the six tastes are a reminder that life is a mixture of experiences. The Telugu temples across Mauritius hold special prayers, and families gather for a feast that includes pulihora (tamarind rice) and bobbatlu (sweet lentil bread). . 2026: Mar 22. 2027: Apr 11.
