The second day of Pongal is dedicated to cows, and the celebration includes the decoration of the cows with flowers, the feeding of the cows with sweet rice, and the thanking of the cows for their milk, their labor, and their companionship. The cow is sacred in Hinduism, and the Mattu Pongal is a day of gratitude. In rural areas of Mauritius, families that keep cattle wash and decorate their animals with paint and bells.
