The anniversary of Mauritania's independence from France on November 28, 1960. The celebration includes a military parade, the president's address, and the flying of the Mauritanian flag (green with a yellow crescent and star). The day is both celebration and reflection, because independence did not bring prosperity : the country has faced multiple coups and ethnic tensions between the Arab-Berber north and the Sub-Saharan south. In Nouakchott, the parade includes camel-mounted gendarmerie units in full colonial-era dress, and the traditional guedra dance is performed at the presidential palace. The guedra : a hypnotic, trance-inducing dance performed by women with hand-clapping and chanting : is one of Mauritania's most distinctive cultural expressions.
