The Banc d'Arguin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important bird habitats in the world : millions of migratory birds winter here, including the spoonbill, flamingo, and pelican. The park covers 12,000 square kilometers of coastline, islands, and tidal flats, and it is home to the Imraguen people : a fishing community that has lived here for over 1,000 years and that maintains traditional fishing methods including hand-thrown nets and siren fishing (cooperation with wild dolphins who drive mullet toward the shore). The Imraguen are the only people permitted to fish in the park, and they use wooden lachour pirogues with sails made of sewn-together mangrove leaves. The day is marked by conservation events and by the Imraguen's own seasonal fishing calendar.
