Not a public holiday, but the anniversary of the 1978 coup that overthrew President Moktar Ould Daddah : Mauritania's first president. The day is a reminder of the political instability that has plagued the country since independence. Daddah had led Mauritania into the Western Sahara conflict, bankrupting the country and alienating the military. The coup, led by Lieutenant Mustafa Ould Salek, began a pattern of military intervention that continued through 1984, 2005, and 2008.
