Journée de la Femme

Observed with events organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the day's demands include equal rights, an end to gender-based violence, and recognition of women's contributions to the economy. Mauritania has one of the highest rates of female genital mutilation in the world (67%), and the day is both celebration and demand. The Imraguen women of the Banc d'Arguin coast : who traditionally managed the fishing economy while men were at sea : use the day to highlight their unique matriarchal traditions, including the araz fishing rituals where women direct the catch from the shore. Urban women in Nouakchott reference the ancient Moorish princess traditions, where noble Bidan women commanded caravans and managed vast estates.
