Jebwa Spirit Tradition Day

The Jebwa are the spirits of Marshallese cosmology : ancestors, nature spirits, and beings that inhabit specific places on the atolls. Every reef, every grove of breadfruit trees, every stretch of ocean has its Jebwa, and the Marshallese tradition holds that these spirits must be respected, acknowledged, and occasionally appeased. Before a fishing expedition, a navigator might whisper a prayer to the Jebwa of the reef pass. Before building a house, a family might leave an offering of food at the base of a large tree. The Jebwa tradition was partly suppressed by Christian missionaries but never fully erased, and it persists in the form of taboos about certain places, stories told to children about wandering at night, and the practice of asking permission before entering unfamiliar territory. On Jebwa Remembrance Day, elders share stories of encounters with spirits, and the community acknowledges that the Marshall Islands are not just physical islands : they are spiritual landscapes where the visible and invisible worlds overlap.
