The day is observed with events organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the demands include equal rights, an end to domestic violence, and the recognition of women's contributions to the economy. In the Marshall Islands, women hold a unique and powerful position: land is owned and inherited matrilineally, passed from mother to daughter, and a woman's consent is required for any land transaction. The Iroij (chiefly) system also recognizes women as landowners and decision-makers, though colonial and modern legal systems have eroded some of these rights. Women's Day in the Marshalls is both celebration and demand : a celebration of the matriarchs who hold the culture together, and a demand for equal protection under laws that were largely written without women's input.
