A day celebrating the Marshallese stick chart navigation tradition, one of the most unique and sophisticated non-instrumental navigation systems ever developed. The rebbelib is a stick chart made from palm ribs tied together with coconut fiber, with small shells marking island positions. But the rebbelib does not show distances or compass directions : it shows the patterns of ocean swells as they refract, reflect, and bend around islands. A trained navigator could feel these swell patterns through the hull of a canoe and determine their position relative to islands that were beyond the horizon. There were three types of stick charts: the rebbelib (showing swell patterns around a whole island group), the meddo (showing swell patterns around a smaller area), and the kai-sa-kai (a teaching chart for students). Each chart was personal to the navigator who made it and was often destroyed or buried with its creator. The tradition was nearly lost during the colonial period, when Western navigation supplanted indigenous knowledge, but surviving examples in the Alele Museum and the revival of canoe culture have brought new attention to this extraordinary achievement of Marshallese science.
