Iroij Laplap Memorial Day
A day of remembrance for the great Iroij (chiefs) of Marshallese history, particularly Iroij Laplap, the mythic founding chief who is said to have come from the sea and established the first chiefly lineages. The Marshallese chiefly system is one of the oldest continuous political structures in the Pacific, and the Iroij held power over land, sea, and people through a combination of genealogical authority and spiritual potency. The oral histories recount that Iroij Laplap commanded the tides, spoke with the ocean spirits, and divided the atolls among his children : establishing the matrilineal land tenure system that persists to this day. Ceremonies on this day involve recitations of lineage genealogies (bwebwenato) by trained storytellers, who can recite dozens of generations from memory. The day reminds Marshallese that their identity is inseparable from their chiefs, their land, and their ocean.
