Rongelap Return Day
In 1957, the U.S. government told the Rongelapese it was "safe" to return to their atoll, three years after the Bravo fallout had blanketed their island with radioactive ash. The return was later revealed to be part of a secret U.S. study on human radiation exposure : Project 4.1 : which documented the effects of fallout on the Rongelapese without their informed consent. The community lived on Rongelap for decades before discovering they had been subjects of a human radiation experiment. They evacuated again in 1985, this time by the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior, after women of Rongelap petitioned for rescue. The Rongelapese remained in exile until a limited resettlement program began in the 2010s. Rongelap Return Day commemorates both the resilience of the Rongelap community and the betrayal they endured : a reminder that "safe" is a word that must be earned, not declared by those who caused the harm.
