Fishermen's Holiday

The day after Fishermen's Day is a public holiday, and the celebration continues with more fishing, more eating, and more storytelling. The Marshallese are master storytellers, and the stories are about the ocean, the fish, and the navigation. The best stories are about the old navigators who could sail across the Pacific without instruments, using only the stars, the swells, and the stick charts. This is also the day for sea chanties (ronjkin waa), the traditional Marshallese paddling and sailing songs that set the rhythm for canoe crews and fishermen. Each chanty has a specific rhythm matching the stroke of the paddle or the pull of the net, and the lead singer (ronjkin) calls out verses while the crew responds in chorus. The chanties encode navigation knowledge, fishing lore, and moral teachings : and they are some of the oldest surviving Marshallese oral literature.
