The feast of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Knights of St John, is celebrated in Valletta and throughout Malta. The Knights of St John (also known as the Knights of Malta) were a Catholic military order that ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798, and St John the Baptist was their patron saint. The Co-Cathedral of St John in Valletta is the most important church in Malta, and it contains two masterpieces by Caravaggio: "The Beheading of St John the Baptist" and "St Jerome Writing." The cathedral is also famous for its floor, which is covered with the tombstones of the Knights, each one a work of art in marble and inlaid stone. The feast of St John is a reminder that the Knights of St John built Valletta, and that the city would not exist without them.
