The names of the dead from the 1991 protests are read aloud at the Monument of the Martyrs in Bamako. The monument is a concrete obelisk that looks like it is holding up the sky, and the families of the dead stand beneath it with photographs pressed to their chests. The silence after each name is longer than the name itself.
