Fete de l'Afrique
The anniversary of the African Union's founding in 1963. Malians wear African fabrics, play African music, and cook African food. The bazin riche comes out, the boubous are pressed, and the streets of Bamako look like a runway. The day is a reminder that Mali is both Sahelian and African, and that the border is a line the colonizers drew and the people ignore.
