Journee de la Democratie

The anniversary of the 1991 revolution that overthrew Moussa Traore. Students and workers flooded the streets of Bamako, and the military opened fire, killing over 100. The democracy they won has been interrupted by four coups, the most recent in 2020. The day is observed with ceremonies and the uncomfortable knowledge that the struggle is not over.
