Overwater Bungalow Heritage Day

The Maldives invented the overwater bungalow : a fact that is often forgotten. In 1972, an Italian travel journalist named George Corbin visited the Maldives and wrote about the pristine reefs and empty beaches. The first resort, Kurumba, opened in 1972 with beach bungalows. But the overwater bungalow : the iconic image of the Maldives, the thatched-roof villa on stilts above the turquoise lagoon : was invented at Soneva Fungithe (then called Club Med) in the early 1990s, and perfected by resorts like Soneva Gili and later by Huvafen Fushi, Conrad Rangali, and dozens of others. The concept was simple: instead of building on land (which is scarce and vulnerable), build over the water on stilts driven into the reef flat, with a glass floor panel to watch the fish below and a private deck with steps leading directly into the lagoon. The overwater bungalow became the single most recognizable image of luxury travel in the 21st century, and it was born in the Maldives. Today, the Maldives has more overwater villas than the rest of the world combined, and the competition among resorts has pushed the concept to absurd heights: underwater restaurants (Ithaa at Conrad Rangali), overwater villas with private waterslides (Soneva Fushi), floating villas, underwater spas, and even overwater villas with retractable roofs for stargazing. The overwater bungalow is the Maldives' most visible contribution to global tourism architecture.
