Resolution Map Day

New Year's Resolutions are nearly universal failures in every culture. Now that New Year's Day is a few days behind, if you truly intend to make change, today is when you map realistic goals on a calendar and write daily steps you can take to make goals real. If you won't write it today, you'll have nothing to follow tomorrow.

Coral Stone Mosque Day

The Maldives' coral stone mosques : particularly the Hukuru Miskiiy (Friday Mosque) in Malé, built in 1656 : represent a unique architectural tradition found nowhere else on Earth. These mosques are constructed from coral stone, intricately carved with Arabic calligraphy and geometric patterns, and topped with coral-bound roofs. The Hukuru Miskiiy was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage tentative list site in 2022, and the surrounding coral stone walls and cemetery contain some of the oldest surviving tombstones in the Indian Ocean. The coral stone is quarried from the reef itself : not cut, but shaped from living coral blocks : and the construction technique has remained unchanged for over 800 years. The mosque interiors are dim, cool, and fragrant with sandalwood incense, and the coral walls bear Quranic verses carved in a flowing Thuluth script that merges Arabic calligraphy with local Maldivian artistry. The compound also includes a minaret (munnaaru) built in 1675, a coral stone well used for ablution, and a cemetery with intricately carved tombstones marking the graves of sultans, scholars, and commoners alike. Other significant coral stone mosques include the Friday Mosque of Fenfushi, the Kedje Fannu Mosque of Isdhoo, and the mosque of Dhanbidhoo : all testaments to a building tradition that turned the reef itself into sacred architecture.
