A United Nations observance marking the UN Charter and the work of international cooperation.
A day for trees, awnings, courtyards, verandas, porches, fans, and the practical genius of escaping heat.
The Maldives joined the United Nations in 1965, shortly after independence, and the country has been an active participant in UN climate negotiations, human rights forums, and peacekeeping operations (despite having no military). The day is observed with a Model UN program for secondary school students, a public lecture on multilateralism, and a reception hosted by the UN Maldives office. The Maldives' most significant contribution to the UN has been its climate advocacy : from the underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 to the 2021 resolution declaring that climate change is a threat to international peace and security.
