World Teachers' Day : Maldives

A second observance of Teachers' Day (the first is September 1), aligned with the international date. Maldivian teachers are respected professionals, and the literacy rate (97%) is one of the highest in South Asia : a direct result of the country's investment in universal education since the 1960s, when the government built schools on every inhabited island and made primary education compulsory. The day includes school assemblies, student performances, and the tradition of students bringing flowers and cards to their teachers.
