Not Independence Day (that's July 26) : this is the anniversary of the establishment of the Second Republic in 1968, when the Maldives voted in a referendum to abolish the 853-year-old sultanate and become a republic. The day is observed with official ceremonies and the reminder that the Maldives transitioned from a sultanate to a republic without violence : a rare achievement in postcolonial history. The last sultan, Muhammad Fareed Didi, signed the abdication papers aboard a British ship in Malé harbor and left for exile.
