Dhoni Season Opening

The dhoni is the traditional Maldivian sailing vessel : a handcrafted, curved wooden boat that has been the backbone of inter-island transport, fishing, and trade for over 2,000 years. Built from coconut wood and breadfruit timber, the dhoni's design is believed to derive from the Arab dhow, adapted to the shallow lagoons and coral passages of the atolls. Every dhoni is built by eye, without blueprints, by master carpenters called "maaruveriyaa" who inherit their craft through generations. The hull is carved from a single coconut trunk for smaller vessels, or planked for larger ones, and the sail : traditionally a triangular lateen : is made from woven palm leaves or cotton. Modern dhonis use diesel engines, but the sail dhoni still races in the annual regatta. The dhoni is not just a boat: it is the way the Maldives moves. Inter-island ferries are dhonis, fishing boats are dhonis, resort excursion boats are dhonis. The word "dhoni" appears in English as "doney" in 17th-century maritime records, and the design is so efficient that naval architects have studied its hull form for low-drag efficiency. The season opening in March marks the transition from the northeast monsoon to the calm inter-monsoon period : the best time for inter-atoll voyages.
